Amino levulinic acid (Levulan)

ALA + O2 + Light ‡ O-

ALA-based PDT (B). Application of ALA bypasses the rate-determining action of heme on ALA-synthase. Increased PBG-deaminase and decreased ferrochelatase activities in rapid proliferating cells result in high accumulation of protoporphyrin IX in these tissues.
